Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Recombinant DNA and Protein Core Facility

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology hosts and sponsors the Recombinant DNA/Protein Resource Facility.  This Facility provides sophisticated biochemical analyses, vends specialized biochemicals, and manages a pod of multi-user instruments.  The Facility's resources include a new ABI 3730 DNA Analyzer for sequencing and genotyping, a new OrbitrapXL mass spectrometer for proteomics, a new Typhoon fluorescence imager, state-of-the-art real-time Q-PCR, and much more.  The three scientists that staff the Facility have more than seven decades of cumulative experience in molecular biology and biochemistry.  In addition to performing turn-key analyses, these individuals work one-on-one with students, conduct focused hands-on workshops, assist with troubleshooting, and provide consultations on project planning and execution.  Support from the NSF provides students with direct hands-on access to some of the most powerful research instruments in the world.  

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Array and Bioinformatics Core Facility

High-throughput and information-rich genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics require instrumentation and data analyses capable of processing large sample sets.  The Array and Informatics Cores provide high-density (100,000 probes per slide) DNA microarrays. Highly specialized arraying can be performed for genotyping efforts and biodiversity projects.  Instruments are available for non-contact inkjet patterning of substrates, or arraying biomolecules, live cells, and beads. Plates with individual arrays per well are made for biodiversity, protein interaction and morphogen studies. New quality control instrumentation includes the Agilent Bioanalyzer.  A large suite of bioinformatics capabilities, full-time informatics personnel, and sophisticated computer systems are available for users. The Array Core has operated over seven years of hands-on workshop training in microarrays.  The Cores serve as a hub for recruiting students (over 300 students per year) and new faculty (50 contacts or tours).

The Core facility currently provides cutting-edge capabilities for research proposals including $3.2M in current extramural funds, and over $3M in pending extramural proposals.  Profitable agricultural biotechnology has increased awareness of core capabilities. The OSU Microarray Core Facility is used by more than 50 research groups and processes hundreds of thousands of samples yearly. OSU Microscopy Laboratory

The OSU Microscopy Laboratory is  a multi-user, shared instrumentation facility for materials research spanning from nanotechnology to biology and medicine. It is located in Suite 104 of the Venture 1 Building in the Oklahoma Technology and Research Park, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Analytical capabilities of the Facility include microscopy via electron beams, force probes and visible light; nanomechanical and nanotribological probes. Established in 1977, the Lab has served as the central research, teaching and training center for microscopy of OSU for 30 years. A full range of services are offered including full service from sample preparation to final imaging, partial service which includes just sample preparation or support service in which the investigator performs the work using the Lab’s equipment. Statewide NMR multi-user Facility

The Statewide NMR Facility is located in the Chemistry Department and houses a Varian UNITY INOVA 600 NB NMR system and a Varian UNITY INOVA 400 NB NMR system. The computer networks enable users to transfer, process data, and operate spectrometers statewide. These NMR systems are in addition to the Varian 300 MHz Broadband GEMINI 2000 High-Resolution NMR System found in the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory.  In addition to the above instruments, a Varian/Chemagnetics CMX-II 300 MHz Solid State NMRspectrometer is available for use.  This system is equipped with three rf channels for study of magnetic nuclei at resonant frequencies from 10 to 300 MHz.
